Mia on the other hand. Holy Moly. I figured that with the fiance home sleeping she would be ok. Not one bit. She cried and cried waking him up, paced all over the house looking for Otis, and ended up sitting at the front waiting for us to get home. Poor Girl

The dogs and I have the same routine every morning. We get up, I shower & dry my hair and then Molly eats while Diego goes outside. She joins him there when she's done her breakfast.

The same routine happened this morning and the dogs were busy barking at birds and the neighbors for the majority of the morning. They do quiet when I tell them to, so I was in and out as well. Then, I can only assume, some a$$hole opened the front gate. I'm not sure who would do such a thing, but I ...

Happy Birthday BooBoo

He turns 3 today.

Last eve I snuggled him a bit and told him about the day he was born.

Tonight I'll probably look through his "baby" pictures LOL. Gosh they're small for such a short period of time, I'm glad I have photos to remind me. He was 12lbs the day we took him home and weighs 75 lbs today. That's a LOT of growing !

We first saw him when he was 5 weeks old. He was really not even fully walking yet, just wriggling around on 4 stumpy little legs. ...

I went to take a look at the daycare last night and am so very pleased!

The lady lives in a pretty uppity neighborhood in Calgary and probably has one of the best lots in the whole city! She backs onto a pretty busy street, but I'd guess her yard is almost a full acre! I was pretty amazed, my dogs were in heaven running around there.

I was very comfortable with her and the surroundings. One thing that has turned me off about most daycares in Calgary is that they seem to have way too ...

Although, I DO have to say "shedding season has officially begun" in our house!

Mother Nature knows Spring has started and has commenced with her plan to feel my dog's ribs under all that fur!

It started a week or so ago. Started to find little "fur explosions" on the carpet when Keymo got up. I'd also see little clumps "dangling" ...

I think back to what Brad said "Have faith in your dog".

Yeah - gotta post that on the fridge as a reminder!

- Hubby is the one who started letting him "hang out" in the back of the open Jeep hatch, while he works on or washes it. Keymo happily hangs out "like one of the boys".

Yep, Rexy tried to run off with the coyotes yesterday. Scary several minutes for me, an exhilirating and wildly fun moment for her I'm sure.

I had her off-leash in a wooded area across the river from town. I see coyotes there regularly in the fall and occasionally at other times, but they're generally quite wary and shy. I've only surprised one once. Every other time they watch and wait, and once you notice them, move somewhere else. In all, not a concern. The last time I walked there with ...

Science Based Positive Reward Training- Where has it really taken us?

One of my biggest concerns about many "science" based positive reward based training methods is that it really belittles a dog's intelligence in the long run and starts to look a little lab-rattish to me.

My own experience in such classes only strengthened my belief that arming owners with artificial means to train a dog, such as clickers, treats etc may actually interfere with or be used instead of developing that all-important bond and relationship with our canines.

Knowing that Molly needs socialization and is good with other dogs, I took her to the dog park last night for the first time in a long time. Its so weird to see her at the dog park in comparison with Diego.

She's a bit antisocial. Doesn't really like to hang out with other dogs... Sniffed a couple and told off a couple of rambunctious pups, but otherwise kept to herself or to me or to sniffing trees. She eventually tried to engage with a pack of little dogs that were running their butts ...

I have to sign in when we arrive and there are often lots of people coming and going. Chewy is already very excited by the time I finish and if I spend too much time chatting with people up front, she starts whining and pulling on the leash.

Yesterday, I finally said "So, where do we go first?" and she immediately lead me to the correct door out of several options.

At the beginning of each class we go through our highs and lows of the week before getting into anything new. Well in the two weeks everyone had their fair share of brags and blow ups.

One of my brags was about re-introducing umbilical and how easy it was to walk. She wasn't a big fan of this and was still adamant that I learn to 'loose leash' walk without the umbilical. So fine, I did it in class. My other brag was about my last post of leave it/take it/go get it, which I did get in ...

So as much as I complain about having to train the dogs separately and how much time it takes, it can be really fun sometimes...

Worked with Molly first... Took her about 15 minutes to 'submit' to the exercise that the instructor refuses to call a pin, so I've got alot more work to do with her! Everythign else went really smoothly though, leave it went amazingly well and I kind of did some leave it flooding, surrounded her with treats and wouldn't let her touch any of them.
A gorgeous sunny day resulted in us hanging out at the dog park for a couple of hours today. Met up a number of new people and dogs, all of whom got along splendidly.

As I was walking along with one fellow while his dog and Chewy were off on a chase, I realized I had lost one of my mitts, likely back quite a ways where I had taken it off to pick up after her.

Molly is definitely pushing back however she can and is a bit more difficult to work with. I've also put my bed back up on the frame so Molly can no longer jump up on my bed at will (she'll try once or twice at night) and if she can't get up there, Diego won't get up there. One of the things I realized today is that Chewy still doesn't know my name. It was underscored today when I told Chewy to take her little bag of treats to my son so he could give her one (he was in living room).
Quite a mouthful, I know.

But I got thinking about it yesterday when I stopped by the St John's Ambulance office yesterday and took Chewy in with me. She's been there about three times now.

It's a very dog friendly office so everyone there usually comes out to say hello and make a fuss over her.

However, there weren't many people there yesterday and after enthusiastically greeting the Director (the only one who came out) Chewy trotted off down the hall. I was about to call her back ...

Well, as of Jan 31st, Rexy's been with us for one full year, and boy, has it ever been an interesting one....

Adopting Rexy and working through her issues led me to Brad's forum for more info, and when that was about to disappear, to this forum, both of which have pointed me in a much different direction in terms of caring for my creatures.
Yep my My Puppy Sugar has decided to that poop popsicles are play toys. i usually clean up my patio deck and the yard that I can get to in the snow poop patrol as I call it every two days. Recently Sugar has thought it fun to pick up the frozen poop to play with. EEEWWWWW! My friend suggested I give my Puppy yogurt plain for a few days that way whenshe goes to pick up the poop it will taste nasty to her. Now mind you she doesn't try to eat it just play with it. Weird eh? She has tons of toys, ...

I often try to throw in a different twist when we're playing just to teach Chewy something new.

Tonight I pulled out the two big plastic yogurt and large margarine containers I use to play the shell game.

Instead of using her nose to knock over the container that had the ball under it, I've taught her to touch it with her paw. Or send the correct container flying with her paw. Whatever works.

The last few times I got her try to put the ball back into the container, which isn't as ...

We had a major list of things for homework this week... all of the things from my "week 2" post plus a pinning exercise that she referred to as a 'hold' exercise.

Last night was my first attempt, so while Diego was outside playing with his buddy Tristan, I worked with Molly. She's never been pinned, although I can manhandle both of my dogs with ease and without fear of any mouthing etc. She was a bit difficult and did struggle, but submitted fairly easily. She got so quiet and ...

Well poor dogs. Mia had a follow up appointment for her eye today and they didnt like being separated. I have never heard my dogs cry before and Otis, it broke my heart. Mia was a little more shaky at the vets and pancaked her self to the floor more than normal, and Otis well my bedroom wasnt destroyed when I came home, so a good boy he was.

I went to senior's center yesterday to observe another Therapy Dog team in action. Thought it would be helpful to see what others are doing and perhaps get some different ideas.

I've noticed that a number of the dogs are now a little more senior themselves, so activities like this give them an important job to do but in a lower key way. They are perfect for places like seniors centers that require very calm and well controlled dogs.

The dog was taken around a group of people who were ...

I've been mulling over something Chewy did while we were in our booth at Pet Expo. Still have no answer.

Chewy suddenly got fixated on something across and down the way and I assumed she was reacting to the parrots again, so redirected her attention.

This happened a few times, so I finally followed her gaze and it was on a booth where two women were seated. Chewy was very determined to go over there so I decided to find out what she was after.

Once I headed in that direction, she literally ...

Today is the day I brought Pepper home to her forever home. She was 5 months old, had round worms hence why she was tired and fat. Pepper completed my life and helped me through so much.

I took her for shots on Feb 3rd and had her dewormed. We bonded and she makes my heart soar with happiness. She has brought me new friends into my life who make training fun for her and I. Agility, obedience , or just having fun going for walks together. ...

Sugar and Pepper Update:

No more messing in the house at night. Nothing worse to waking up to pee and poo in my kitchen. I had to stop free range feeding (having a bowl of kibble out, and they eat when they want). I now have set dinner times for the dogs as well, this helped huge to prevent messes in the house. Having four small dogs in a queen size bed was just nuts.

Sugar is still a puppy and is only 7 months old. Dachshunds as you know are one the hardest small breed dogs to house break. ...

We went to the ball diamond by my house, Wade had a ball and I had a ball... I would throw it and Diego would run, come back drop it and Wade would throw the ball the opposite way. We literally had him going the length of the ball diamond back and forth for probably 10 minutes non stop. Just what he needed!

Anyway, class started out pretty mellow with everyone going ...

Obedience classes going well

Sugar and Pepper are doing well with their basic puppy obedience classes we are almost finished. I will be signing them up for Basic Dog manner next Stating on November 24th. Sugar will have have to miss a few after being spayed.

My fear of larger dogs is subsiding, Pepper's fear is not as great and I correct her if snarls right away and that only shows up if the lift her back end up to smell her or if she wants a toy like a tennis ball.

Progress, Progress Yeah Pepper and Sugar.
